I have been developing software for more than 10 years and am currently doing part time MBA. What steps can I take to switch careers to become equity research analyst focusing on tech companies?
Once u r done with MBA, apply to the brokerages like Edelweiss, Geojit financial, Anandrathi, icicidirect, sharekhan, indiainfoline, capitalmarket, Religare, and so many others (mostly in metros) for the equity analyst position. You can also join any of the mutual funds. You can’t say you will analyse the prospects of IT companies only. It is all part of the learning curve. Best wishes

You would have to study Security Analysis and Portfolio Management with specialization in forecasts of trends in the stock and bond markets, fundamental and technical analysis.
Also it would help if you have an overview of Investment Management which would deal with the valuation of corporate securities of multinational and domestic corporations and the measurement of portfolio performance. The role of returns and risk in valuing stocks, bonds, options, and in constructing portfolios would come in handy for an equity research job focusing IT companies.
As you already possess experience working as a Software Engineer for the past 10 years, it would help you evaluate the trends which would increase the value of stocks of IT companies. Good Luck!

make sure you get an internship while you are doing your MBA..why? because chances are you will have a greater chance of getting the research analyst role that you want. Its particularly important now seeing as its recession time here in the UK!
